ObituaryMar 29, 2023  OBITUARY: ELAINE M. (TIPPING) O’REILLY – of Woburn, formerly of Winchester, died peacefully, March 29th at the age of seventy-two after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of the late Christopher J. “Kit” O’Reilly Jr.

Born in New Bedford, MA, Elaine was a daughter of the late William L. Tipping Sr. and Anita Fedora (Garant) Tipping MacKay. As a young child, Elaine moved to various places as her father served in the Armed Forces. They later settled in Woburn and she graduated from Marycliff Academy, before attending Boston College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

On June 16, 1973, Elaine married the love of her life, the late Christopher J. “Kit” O’Reilly Jr. Elaine briefly worked as a nurse then followed “Kit” overseas while he served in the US Army. She then began teaching US soldiers in South Korea. Kit’s job led to the family moving often and settling in Maryland for a brief time. It was there that their son Patrick was born in 1975. In 1977, Kit died tragically while serving actively in the US Army, leaving Elaine to raise their son Patrick on her own.

After moving back to Massachusetts to be with her family, Elaine found a new love in teaching. She started by volunteering at her son’s school, St. Mary’s in Winchester and eventually went on to teach mathematics and computer classes. She earned a Masters degree in Education from Lesley University. Years later she became the principal, dedicating all her time and knowledge to helping the students and faculty. She retired as Principal of St. Mary of the Annunciation School in Danvers. She had a lifelong passion for teaching and learning and was a perpetual student, taking courses throughout her life.

Elaine devoted her life to her family, especially her son and grandchildren. She was an ever-constant presence in their lives and never missed an event or accomplishment. She was a hands on mother and grandmother, never missing an opportunity to play, laugh and teach her son and grandchildren. She loved entertaining and going to family events, never forgetting to bring an overabundance of desserts. She was a devoted caregiver to her mother Anita in her later years.

Elaine enjoyed traveling, reading, and socializing. She was a very outgoing, kind, and loving person with many longtime friends. She was incredibly selfless and generous, and she dearly loved spoiling her grandchildren. She had a way of making any person she was talking to feel like they were the most important person in the world. Her laugh lit up any room she entered. She was deeply religious and had a strong faith in God, and leaned to prayer in good times and through challenging times. She was incredibly strong and brave and always kept a positive attitude, and she inspired her friends, loved ones and caregivers with her determination to succeed in all she did. Those who were blessed to know and love her were better for it.

She spent her final weeks in the loving presence of her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and the highest quality of medical professionals. The family extends their sincere appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Mass General Hospital and Lahey Clinic Medical Center who compassionately provided excellent medical care.

Devoted mother of Patrick S. O’Reilly, his wife Kim of Nahant. Adoring grandmother of Adam and Nora. Dear sister of Michael Tipping, his wife Jannine of VT, the late Sheila Guerin, her husband John of CT and the late William and Donald Tipping. Treasured aunt of Cheryl Copeland, her husband David of MD, Carl Guerin, his wife Nicole of Marblehead, and Kenneth Guerin, his wife Heather of PA, and great-aunt of Jones, Aurora, Natalie, Thomas, and Elaine.
